How many views to go full-time on YouTube?

If you've ever asked the question "how many views do I need to go full-time on YouTube?"

It's the wrong question.

Let me explain why.

On YouTube, there's this thing called RPM (revenue per mille), which is just a fancy way of saying how much money you pocket per 1,000 views.

And depending on how you monetize, the answer changes dramatically.

Let me show you what I mean.

AdSense

My AdSense RPM is about $6.

To make $5,000/month from AdSense alone, I'd need 833,000 views. Every. Single. Month.

My best month ever on YouTube was 200,000 views. โฌ‡๏ธ That got me about $1,300.

So is AdSense realistic by itself? Definitely not... ๐Ÿ™…

Affiliate Marketing

Well what about Affiliate marketing?

My RPM for affiliates was about $1.50, granted it wasn't a big part of my strategy.

Even still, that would take over 3 million views a month to hit $5,000 a month.

Sponsorships

You might be thinking about sponsorships, and these are more interesting. ๐Ÿ‘€

The industry benchmark is around $30 RPM.

Now you're looking at 167,000 views a month, which isn't too bad actually.

But that only works if every single video is sponsored, and that kind of makes it impossible to be honest.

Fan-Funding & Merch

If you're dabbling in fan-funding (Patreon, Ko-fi, Buy Me a Coffee), those can be fun, but they're not a real strategy.

Merch is the same way.

In fact there's no industry benchmarks that we can even point to that indicates how many views you'd need to earn $5k/month from either one.

The short answer is you'd need a lot of view, likely millions per month.

Something Better

Now here's my plea to you and where things are far less gloomy.

My overall RPM across the last 6 months is around $42.

That's across AdSense, Affiliates, Community and Coaching.

So again, for every 1000 views I get on YouTube, I earn about $42.

This is still not that much but it's far better than the $6 from AdSense alone.

At a $42 RPM, I need about 119,000 views a month to hit $5K.

That's clearly far more manageable than 833,000.

And that's the whole point, which brings us to the right question to be asking...

"How much is each view actually worth to you?"

Now you might not be monetized yet but I would encourage you start thinking about your monetization strategy.

The creators who go full-time fastest aren't the ones with the most views.

They're the ones who figured out how to make each view worth more.

If you're earning from YouTube, shoot me a reply with your RPM. I'd love to know where you stand.

The formula is simple: (Total earnings รท Total views) ร— 1,000 = your RPM.

So let's say you earned $500 across 30,000 views.

$500 รท 30,000 ร— 1,000 = $16 RPM.

Once upon a time โ€” October 2024 โ€” I was 3 months into YouTube, and tracking my progress in a Google Sheet toward the elusive goal of getting monetized on YouTube. The rate I was gaining subscribers and watch-time meant I had a looong road ahead. At the exact moment I took this screenshot, the math said it'd take me another 93 weeks of posting twice a week โ€” 172 more videos โ€” just to hit 4,000 watch-time hours. 93 weeks is nearly 2 years! And because Watch-Time Hours on YouTube fall off on a...

He got monetized in 1 month, in just 9 videos. That's probably the quickest I've seen anyone get monetized. His name is Tristen. He'll make more in 2 days from AdSense than I'll do this entire month. And I couldn't be happier for him. You might be asking... Is he some kind of YouTube savant? No Does he at least know what he's doing? He'll say no, but more-so than most. Does he make great videos? Actually yes, he's wonderful on camera, knows his subject and edits like a pro. But there's a lot...

Hey I've got a killer idea for you. This will be a fun one! I posted a video earlier this week called "I'm begging you to make boring YouTube videos." Coincidently, one of my former clients, Rachael, made her own version of it. I swear we didn't plan this. (well sort of) Hers is called "I'm Begging You to Check Your Hoyas" (She's a plant momma ๐ŸŒฑ) And I'm happy to report, both videos are performing well above average. ๐Ÿ’ช Mine is currently a 2 of 10. And for Rachael, it's a 1 of 10. She even got...
